The Llobregat Delta is, once more, endangered, and its disappearance would affect the health and welfare of citizens in the metropolitan area.
Throughout Europe, brave measures are being implemented to stop climate change. For instance, the building of a third runway at London's Heathrow Airport has been blocked to mitigate global warming. Meanwhile, in our country, several mass media informed that AENA (air navigation authority in Spain) is planning to destroy the unreplaceable natural, agricultural and cultural area of La Ricarda to expand the third runway of Barcelona - El Prat Airport. This expansion plan is a serious attack against public interests in such a context of climate emergency, in which we should innovate to transform our means of production, consumption and transportation, with the future of our planet at stake.
Many of us are aware that the old concept of developmentalism is outdated. It is high time to develop a sustainable airport model in Catalonia. Instead of destroying the Llobregat Delta and the Agricultural Park of Baix Llobregat, we should be protecting them. And this is what the Plenary Council of El Prat de Llobregat approved in an official statement supported by all political groups.
